Why John joined Fair Start Scotland
John joined the service early last year at the age of 63, having been made redundant from his previous job. He has worked as a chef his whole working life, and he achieved a City and Guilds award in 1974 in Basic Cookery and Cookery for the Catering Industry. John predominantly worked as a cook in several care homes across Scotland.
John’s biggest perceived barrier was his age. He regularly expressed that he didn’t think he would be hired due to being older than many other candidates who would be applying for the same roles.
How Fair Start Scotland helped
While in pre-employment support, John was helped with his job searching, updating his CV, and he was also given access to Learn My Way to complete relevant modules to improve his IT skills. John has managed to secure work as a Prep Chef at the Macdonald Norwood Hall Hotel in Aberdeen. He has been in the job for over two weeks now and is working 20 hours per week. John is enjoying being back at work and looks forward to his first payday. John has also gained a lot of confidence in himself.
What’s next?
Although John is thinking about increasing his working hours, he is currently happy with working 20 hours a week and finds that this allows him to balance his work and social life. John has accepted weekly phone call check-ins from an adviser and he will be able to use this time to request any support he may require.
