Cheryl’s life changes after help from StartScotland.

Cheryl was unemployed for eight years before seeking help from StartScotland and has now successfully secured a new role as a housekeeper.

Why Cheryl joined the Fair Start Scotland service

Cheryl joined Fair Start Scotland after spending eight years raising her young son and daughter. She lacked confidence since taking so long out of work and needed help to produce a professional looking CV and was unsure how to conduct herself in an interview situation.

Cheryl was introduced to her personal adviser Nyree, who coached Cheryl to help her get job ready. Cheryl attended the employability skills workshops to improve her confidence and for her to learn how appeal to employers. She was also booked into the confidence workshop with one of our tutors, this helped Cheryl as she was able to work within a group setting and gain support from her peers.

Getting the job

Due to Cheryl’s childcare issues they explored employers who could accommodate the hours Cheryl was looking for. Nyree invited her to attend an employer fair that the office was hosting and introduced her to the General Manager of a reputable hotel in Kilmarnock. This was a great opportunity as she was able to explain her circumstances face to face and as a result the manager requested a copy of Cheryl’s CV which resulted in being invited to attend an interview. Nyree set up a practice interview session with Cheryl to help prepare her and settle her nerves.

Cheryl was delighted to secure a job as a Housekeeper, and she cannot be more thrilled.

Cheryl said: ‘Fair Start Scotland helped build my confidence to get me back into employment. I enjoy my role as I work with a great group of people and I am enjoying having my independence back. I would like to thank everyone at Fair Start Scotland for helping me get back into employment, I believe if I didn’t attend the service I would still be unemployed.”
