support to help you back to work

Is your health holding you back from finding the right job?


If so, you can join Fair Start Scotland the flexible employment support service tailored to meet your needs. We’ll help you to bridge the gap between any health issues and securing a job.


You will be able to: 
 

  • access our fully qualified physical and mental health professionals

  • work with our external partners including Disability Confident employers, NHS services, Psychological Therapy providers

  • receive one to one support and attend face to face / online group sessions focusing on stress management, managing anxiety, confidence building, pain management, disclosing your health condition and lots more

  • explore employment opportunities with local employers we work with.

Our team of health professionals will work with you to build a health and work support package that suits you - setting out clear goals with an aim to move you into work when you feel ready.

Triage – 'three-way approach'
 

If you tell us about a health issue whilst we’re getting to know you -  then a meeting with you, your personal adviser and one of our in-house qualified health professionals will be arranged.


This is an opportunity to explore, in an informal setting, what your health barriers to employment are and agree a health plan that works for you.
 

By fully understanding your health issue your personal adviser and health adviser will tailor the service to your needs, making sure any employment goals and aspirations are manageable.

 

One to one health support

You could start benefiting from our one to one health support which you'll only every receive from a fully qualified health professional so you know you’re in good hands.


One to one support includes developing effective coping strategies or help with the practical side of things, such as identifying job goals that are compatible with your health issues, discovering local Disability Confident employers and supporting you with reasonable adjustments once you are in work.

Workshops (face-to-face)


Depending on what type of support you need to help you back to work, you may be invited to attend one of our small groups workshops covering health specific, health education, lifestyle and wellbeing and work specific such as disclosing a health condition, managing interview nerves. Your adviser will work with you to decide which workshop will be best for you. 

Digital health and wellbeing workshops  

If you are unable to take part in a face-to-face workshop then you can join one our digital sessions. These are designed to support you with managing your health and wellbeing such as Anxiety Management, Confidence Building, Sleep and Routine, Stress Management and Coping Strategies, Healthy Eating and so much more.

 

Our workshops are designed to equip you with strategies for better managing your health issues in preparing for the workplace

In-work support
 

Our help doesn't stop once you're in work. We will continue to work with you and your employer, providing tailored health specific coping strategies to help you stay and thrive in your new role. 

Our health and wellbeing offer is only available through StartScotland, not all of our delivery partners may offer this level of support just yet. 

 

Application window closed

New referrals to Scottish Government’s national Fair Start Scotland (FSS) employability service have ended.

 

Current Fair Start Scotland customers will continue to receive the full range of employability support they need from StartScotland to move into work, which could include up to 18 months pre-work and up to 12 months in work support (depending on your circumstances). 

 

From 1 April 2024, No One Left Behind, Scottish Government & Local Governments’ shared approach to delivering an all-age, place-based, person-centred model of employability support in Scotland, will receive referrals previously referred to StartScotland.
